Anonymous said: I'm seriously confused. How is Apple's thing about her blonde hair racist? With most "popular girls" in media being blonde, not to mention how many popular blonde bimbos I had to put up with in high school, seeing blonde hair portrayed in a negative light is kind of refreshing.
I do not appreciate the use of the word “bimbo”. Do not call people or characters that.
Apple is not portrayed in a negative light. Everyone at EAH loves her. Everyone at EAH thinks she’s more beautiful than anyone else, especially for her blonde hair. She’s studious, patient, and helpful, and she’s one of the two protagonists of the franchise.
The fact the fandom reacts dividedly to her is because one part sees the above and another part sees how Apple is benefitted disproportionally (ie, how Briar constantly does things and nobody cares while Apple is immediately rewarded with affirmation, or how Duchess is explicitly juxtaposed as not as pretty in comparison to Apple to humiliate her) and doesn’t let her character flaws slide because of that disproportionate benefit.
And that’s ignoring that one part feels Apple’s blonde hair and need to wear glasses make her sympathetic, while the other part takes note that neither play a (negative) role in 99.5% of Apple’s narrative.
So, Apple is not portrayed negatively, just really… like Mattel is banking on her whiteness to get her past any criticism.
As for her hair, not only is she a white, blue-eyed, blonde girl, which is pretty much the standard white female protagonist formula, but she’s praised for her beautiful hair. Having “wrong” hair is a narrative that belongs to POC and that belongs to black hair way before it belongs to blonde hair (with the exception when it’s on a POC body and racists will claim its dyed and that the POC secretly wants to be white). The idea a white girl with softly curled blonde hair - the Eurocentric ideal! - can carry that narrative, which is based on pain created specifically to elevate her appearance, is racist. Plain and simple. And as said, the fiction can’t even maintain it. Apple’s maybe once or twice attacked for her hair in the books, but she’s praised and idolized for it across EAH fiction in general. Meanwhile, Blondie goes around saying her hair proves her royal lineage because only royalty could have luxurious golden curls like her and Poppy - the EAH hair expert - confirms this. Add to that that in the Secret Hearts Diary, one of the requirements listed for Princessology is “silky, smooth hair” - which is code for “you can take a hike if you have afro hair”, and the fiction both enforces real-life racism as it applies to hair, but also wants us to feel sorry for one of the main perpetrators for having idealized hair that she’s not even written as suffering under.
I started to get very sad at the end. A REQUIREMENT for Princessology is “silky, smooth hair”? My hair takes after my Hispanic Dad, its soo frizzy and not very close to silky on a good day. I remember idolizing the Disney Princess’es and hated myself because my hair could never be like theirs I have tried everything, even burning my hair with straightening irons Dx. Now I am learning to love it but its a hard road. I can only imagine a kid being like “But my hair isn’t like that…” and feeling terrible.
SO Just in case, I don’t finish which even if its not right away I probably will I wanted to post a WIP, I already started the line art (which are the very much darker lines and the yellow candy lines) The is fanart of peppapigvevos AMAZING Helga Crumb redesign which you can see and like/reblog here if you for some reason haven’t already.
Anybody else remember this episode? In it, a female villain called Femme Fatale is stealing millions of dollars in Susan B. Anthony coins. Naturally, the Powerpuff Girls go to stop her. She then convinces them that men are all horrible because female superheroes aren’t as well known as male superheroes, even asking Blossom to name some to where her only answer is Wonder Woman.
They start acting bitter, refusing to do chores when the Professor asks and even telling the Mayor to save the town himself. Ms. Bellum and Ms. Keane talk to the girls and basically explain that being mean to guys won’t do anything and that isn’t the kind of message feminists should put out.
They proceed to beat up Femme Fatale while giving her a history lesson about Susan B. Anthony, the story where she voted and was found guilty because women couldn’t vote back then, but when the judge wanted to let her off easily because she was a woman, she forced them to take her to jail. The girls handle her and the lesson is that misandry will not stop misogny and we all should just respect each other.
You do know that this whole episode was one big ol’ strawman arguement, right?
Exactly! Also there are so many factors they are ignoring. First thing is that PPG perpetuates a ‘perfect world’ in reference to human rights. Femme Fatal had valid criticisms, such as the super hero one, but it in this world “men don’t hurt women”. But in the real world, ALL MEN have done sexist shit, the thing is if we make it seem like ‘oh only the bad guys do it’ by showing crazy caricatures they will never see that they have done wrong and fix their own behavior. Making Straw Feminist is a tactic to say that “SEE Feminism is wrong because there are clearly no problems!” When its flat out not true.
1. They didn’t change her skin tone. (to be whiter, seriously I could forgive most things but not that)
2. It actually looked good. (I know this is subjective but damn that headpiece looks too..cluttered… maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they used more then one color. Or maybe just not that color, because I like the piece itself (for example when it was leaked it wasn’t in the right color but it still looked nice but here it looks like a huge purple blob on her head.)
I understand differences, While I would prefer for Ashlynn to have a gown, at least she still looks good! Same with Cerise, I would have rathered the original but at least it looks good. They didn’t change much with Maddie except add sparkles. I love sparkles. Maddie is my fav of LD wave 2 xD
Also I am a totally pink addict. I LOVE all things pink. But pink is not her color.
Positive= I like the purse and her necklace, also the outfit looks nice from what we can see of it.
